The Pope’s Red Slippers
There are seven pairs of shoes in St. Kate’s Archives, including these red velvet slippers that belonged to Pope Leo XIII. We’re told the Pope gave them to Archbishop John Ireland during one of the archbishop’s reporting trips to Rome. In the box along with these handmade (Italian, we’re guessing!) shoes are a cuff from the Pope’s white cassock and a zucchetto, or skullcap.
The New York Times mentioned the slippers in an April 14, 2002 article about university libraries becoming “repositories for a bizarre collection of objects.”
